
Bucharest is the capital city, industrial, cultural, and financial centre of Romania. It is the largest city in Romania, located in the southeast of the country, and lies on the banks of the Dâmboviţa. According to January 1, 2009 official estimates, Bucharest proper has a population of 1,944,451. The urban area extends beyond the limits of Bucharest proper and has a population of 2 million people. Adding the satellite towns around the urban area, the metropolitan area of Bucharest has a population of 2,261,698.
Bucharest Municipality is in charge of directly setting the city policies in the following areas: relations with the Eu, budget and finance, public utilities, urban development, transport, urban infrastructure, health, social policies, environment protection, culture and sport, international relations, tourism, economic development.
One of the Mayor's priorities is the constitution of an integrated IT infrastructure to assure the informatical support for the decion-making and for sustaining the reform within the public administration.
This strategy comprises 3 Phases:
- Integrated Information System for the management of the activities within Bucharest City Hall;
- e-Bucharest – Integrated Information System for Local Public Administration and Services extended to citizens;
- the extension of the Integrated Information System to the National Companies, other Units of the Central Public Administration located in Bucharest
