The City of Venice is the capital of the region Veneto, with a population of about 270.000 inhabitants.

As a local democratic government, exercises administrative actions and manages the services, activities and procedures concerning: culture, social welfare, sport, tourism, environment, civil protection, commerce, local rates, public and private building, education. It protects the environment and living species and promotes sustainable development. It promotes, according to the principles of democracy, participation, transparency, solidarity and programming; it promotes the quality of life of its citizens, acting as a guarantor of person, family, pluralism, pacific cohabitation and differences of sex, race, language and religion values.
In the last few years, one of the main objectives of the City of Venice Administration has been to increase the scale and impact of Innovation in order to improve public services and related policies.

The City of Venice has recently launched a lot of actions to develop ICT-based services, from the digitisation of the main City’s activities to the development of web 2.0 technologies to improve citizens participation. In this frame, the City decided to exploit the opportunities offered by the Knowledge Society also to promote the effectiveness of economic development policies, in particular the ones linked to tourism, which represents the most important resource for the City of Venice economy and for job offer. Solutions to develop ICT tools able to support a more sustainable and competitive Tourism sector have been studied, of which the main one is the new public technological platform “Venice-Connected".
Venice is member of the Eurocities Knowledge Society Forum.
